It was in 1772 that the navigator Yves de Kerguelen, an oceanographer, discovered a lost archipelago in the far south of the Indian Ocean. In his log, he wrote, “These isles are a fearsome trap. We found nothing there and we left nothing there if it weren’t for the few cats we had on board. “Two centuries later, the scientists of the “Popchat” mission, specialists in the field, land on the Kerguelen Islands. What was their goal ? To trap the cats that became wild in order to observe how they adapted to the freezing climate of the “isles of distress”. Yet who observes whom ?
C’est en 1772 que le navigateur Yves de Kerguelen, spécialiste de la mer, découvre un archipel à l’extrême sud de l’Océan Indien (qui deviendront les Îles de Kerguelen plus tard). Dans son journal de bord, il écrit : « Ces îles sont un piège redoutable. Nous n’y avons rien laissé, si ce n’est les quelques chats qui nous accompagnaient à bord. ».
Deux siècles plus tard, les scientifiques de la mission « popchat », tous spécialistes du terrain, débarquent dans les îles de Kerguelen. Leur objectif ? Prendre au piège les chats redevenus sauvages afin d’observer leur adaptation au climat glacial des « îles de la désolation ».
Mais qui observe qui ?
Em 1772, o navegador Yves Kerguelen descobriu um arquipélago perdido a sul do Oceano Índico. No diário de bordo escreveu: “Estas ilhas são uma assustadora armadilha. Não encontramos lá nada e apenas deixamos alguns gatos que trazíamos no navio”. Dois séculos depois alguns cientistas voltam à ilha para entender como é que estes gatos se adaptaram ao clima gelado.
